Weekend Round Up

Mark Fletcher19 Apr - 21:17

Pocklington through to round 2 of play offs

Pocklington had three senior teams in action this weekend. The First team successfully negotiated the first round of the promotion play offs, beating Selby 51 34 at Percy Road, the Panthers were just pipped in their semi final play offs at Selby, going down 51 - 48 after extra time and the women avenged their narrow defeat earlier in the season on the East Coast, beating Scarborough Valkyries 46 - 24 to remain in contention for promotion.

With the spring sunshine in evidence, a large crowd assembled at Percy Road to witness a frenetic contest between Pocklington and Selby.
Pock took the lead within two minutes when they stole an early lineout and moved the ball left to Flynn Sangwin who crossed for a try, Christian Pollock converted and Pock were up and running.
Selby hit back on 5 minutes with a try from a tap penalty close to the Pocklington line and were soon in the lead after a scrum back from the restart and they broke straight down the middle to score by the posts, this time the try was converted and they opened up a 7 - 12 lead. Pock drew level on 12 minutes when they moved the ball quickly from a lineout on the left and centre Dan Elliott ghosted through to open his account for the day, Pollock converted and they opened up lead changed hands again, 14 - 12.
The sides then exchanged successful penalty kicks before scrum half Rob Boddy collected the ball at a breakdown and went straight through to score under the posts, Pollock converted and the home side’s half time lead was now 9 points.
Pollock extended the lead to 27 - 15 with a penalty shortly after half time and it wasn’t long before he led a break out of the Pocklington half before releasing Dan Elliott to run 45 metres to score. Elliott then surpassed himself gathering the ball from a box kick and running 50 metres to complete his hat-trick, Pollock converted and Pock were looking comfortable at 39 - 15. Selby mounted a comeback, scoring two tries and reducing the deficit to 12 points with the match being played at a high intensity and once again, being in the balance. With 15 to go Pock extended their lead through some fast interplay between wingers Sangwin and Jed Jackson. Selby then added another try before back row Archie Wilcock crowned an outstanding performance with a try on the right hand side.
Both sides left everything out on the pitch and the crowd had been treated to a very entertaining game.
This week Pocklington host Morley in the second round, kick off 3pm.
