Weekend Round Up

Mark Fletcher30 Mar - 16:50

Pocklington Secure Second place at The Gannock

It was a busy weekend for Pocklington with wins for the First XV at Malton & Norton 22 - 33, the Pilgrims at home to Malton & Norton 24 - 5 and the women at home to Malton & Norton 27 - 14.
The Panthers were beaten at Malton & Norton by 40 - 7 and the Colts finished runners- up to Ilkley in the Yorkshire plate final by 27 - 8. It was a determined effort from the Colts who were in the game until close to the end.

At the Gannock on Saturday Malton were out to be the only team in Regional 2 North-East to do the double over Pocklington this season. They were also in contention for an end of season promotion play off place if they could win. Pock had other ideas.
From the start full back Christian Pollock was making rampaging runs into home territory and on 14 minutes second row Kym Russell went over in the left hand corner to open Pocklington’s account. After more sustained pressure from Pocklington, scrum half James Thompson crossed on the right, Pollock converted and a 0 - 12 lead opened up. Malton narrowed the gap with a try on 32 minutes, using a scrum from a 5 metre penalty to score their first try. With Pocklington uncharacteristically struggling to defend, it looked like the home side might close the gap before half-time but when fly half Harry Matthews intercepted on his own ten metre line he left Malton stranded as he covered the 60 metres to the try line with consummate ease, Pollock slotted the kick and Pock were up 19 - 5. Malton narrowed the gap before the break with a try after winning a lineout from a penalty and driving over for a try. Half time 10- 19.
Early in the second half replacement Matty Downes forced his way over for a bonus point try for Pocklington, Pollock converted and Pock were 16 points in front. Malton narrowed the gap with a further try, but when replacement fly half Henry Clegg sent a booming kick downfield, Jed Jackson skilfully collected the favourable bounce and ran in a try from 45 metres. Pollock converted to end Pocklington’s scoring for the day. Malton did score a bonus point try late on but Pock were comfortable winners by 20 points to 33, and securing a guaranteed home tie in the first round of the playoffs in three weeks time.
With Selby losing to Bradford Salem, Pocklington will not know who they face in the playoffs until the final round of the regular season on April 11th. If Pock beat Moortown then our opponents will be the winners of the game between Selby and Malton & Norton. If Moortown win at Percy Road, they will return a week later for the first round of the playoffs.
