Late Drama at Percy Road as Matthews Lands Winning Penalty in Last Second

There was late drama at Percy Road on Saturday when Harry Matthews landed a penalty kick in the last second of the match to secure a 20 points to 17 win over Bradford Salem.
Despite a strong second half effort, the Pilgrims fell just short at Malton & Norton by 26 - 21.
On Sunday Pocklington women had a 64 - 0 win at York.

After a promising start in the Saturday sunshine Pocklington lost possession in the centre field and Bradford Salem took full advantage with a break down the middle before eventually shipping the ball wide to score on the right after 3 minutes. On 8 minutes Harry Matthews slotted a penalty for Pock to reduce the deficit. On the half hour Pock secured possession in their own 22 and player of the match Dan Elliott sent a long, low kick deep into opposition territory which winger Jed Jackson chased and managed to kick over the try line before evading the Salem defence and touching down for a try. From a difficult position wide on the right, Matthews landed the conversion on the cross bar and the ball dropped over to add the two points. Half time 10 - 5.
Ten minutes in to the second half Salem’s number 7 was yellow carded and from the ensuing scrum penalty, Matty Downes picked up at the base and drew in the defenders before slipping the ball to James Thompson who put Jackson in at the corner for his and Pock’s second try. Matthews converted again from distance, this time clearing the crossbar bar.
Around the hour mark the aforementioned Salem number 7 reduced the deficit with a converted try. Soon after Salem put a penalty into the corner and from the lineout scored to level things at 17 each.
With the result in the balance both sides were battling for the win and with the last play, Thompson won a penalty for Pocklington when he got over the ball at the breakdown right in front of the Salem posts.
Matthews stepped up to kick the goal which gave Pock a thoroughly deserved win. 20 - 17.
Pocklington now require 1 more league point from the remaining two matches to secure a home tie in the first round of the end of season playoffs.
Next week we travel to Malton & Norton.
