The Pocklington Walking Touch Rugby side (WTR) is celebrating after winning their latest rugby festival at Kingston Park, Newcastle, the home of Newcastle Red Bulls.
A hot, sunny day greeted the festival WTR players from 5 different clubs who all got 4 opportunities to display their skills on a pitch alongside the stadium.
Confidence was high amongst Pock’s 10-man group after winning previous festivals at Sheffield Tigers and York, although the hot conditions meant rehydration was vital.
A competitive series of games ensued against York, Wallsend x 2 and Croydon. Results went well with hard fought wins over York, Wallsend and Croydon, with the most difficult fixture being the last one against a combined Wallsend side where Pock went 2 tries down but came back in the second half to draw the game 2 tries each.
It felt like a moral victory afterwards,” said Pocklington’s coach Dave Reeves. “Pock realised their average age was 25 so that explained why their team was so hard to break up.”
Three Festival wins on the bounce and the team are playing well but always looking out for more players. Walking Touch Rugby is the fastest growing version of rugby and Pock is certainly leading the way.
Training sessions take place at Percy Road on Fridays at 1:30pm, although plans are being looked at for training in the evening to encourage more players to join.
If you are a retired player and miss rugby, or just want to learn how to play walking rugby, please come along to Walking Touch Rugby training at Pocklington every Friday at 1.30pm. No skills necessary.
