Freddy Peel Snatches Last Gasp Winning Try at Old Brodleians

Pocklington returned to Halifax for the second successive league fixture to face Old Brodleians who, like them had got off to an unbeaten start to the season, and were above Pock on points difference.
Storm Amy ensured that the conditions were going to be very difficult with a strong wind and heavy driving rain falling intermittently throughout the match. Despite the weather, the Pock faithful had travelled in numbers to see a thrilling encounter.
Pocklington were playing down the slope with the wind behind in the first half and took an early lead when Christian Pollock kicked off, sending a low ball which was knocked on and from the ensuing scrum Pock won a penalty which he converted.
On 8 minutes Brodleians were awarded a penalty at the lineout, found the corner on the left hand side and from next lineout drove over for their opening score.
On 20 minutes Pocklington retook the lead when Harry Matthews orchestrated some great play in midfield, slipping the ball to Archie Willcock who made one of his signature breaks before giving the ball back to Matthews who delivered a perfect cross field kick for winger Rob Boddy, who was stopped just short of the line but managed to recover possession after an opposition knock on and touch down in the corner. The score remained 5 - 8 until half time.
Despite playing up the slope and into the wind, Pock made a good start to the second half and after building phases of play following a penalty for a high tackle, George Grosvenor forced his way over on the right to extend the lead to 13 - 5.
Brodleians were not done though and were rewarded with a penalty try to narrow their scoreboard deficit to a single point.
The home side were having a purple patch and after winning a scrum close to the line their number 8 picked and crossed for a try to put them in the lead with 10 minutes remaining.
It looked like Pocklington might have to settle for a losing bonus point as the home side’s defence appeared impregnable but in the dying moments they moved the ball across the pitch from left to right and a perfectly timed pass from centre Louie Sangwin to replacement teenage winger Freddy Peel saw the youngster glide passed five defenders to touch down under the posts. Pollock converted and Pocklington ran out winners by 20 - 17.
A great win which saw Pocklington move into second place in the league.
At Percy Road the Panthers went down 31- 29 to a last ditch kick from Driffield Cents. and the Pilgrims lost 14- 38 to Driffield Ex Cents.
This Saturday, Pocklington host Selby in Regional 2 North East with the Panthers travelling over there and the Pilgrims face Hull Ionians at Percy Road.
As is always the case when Selby come to town, a big crowd is expected.
