A bumper crowd turned out on Saturday to watch the promotion play-off semi final between Pocklington and Consett from County Durham. It was a tight encounter in the spring sunshine but Pocklington’s powerful scrum and rock solid defence saw them home by 29 points to 25 to earn the right to face York at Clifton Park in this Saturday’s final.
Consett opened the scoring on 12 minutes with a penalty but the lead was short lived and when full back Christian Pollock took a quick tap penalty on the Consett 22 he caught the defence napping and went over for a try, which he converted. On 20 minutes Pocklington won a penalty from a scrum close to the try line, they opted to scrum again and scrum half James Thompson picked up from the base and ghosted through to score under the posts, Pollock converted.
On the stroke of half time Pollock landed a penalty to give Pocklington a 17 - 3 lead at the break.
Consett hit back from the restart and scored an early try after taking a clean ball from a lineout five metres out. Moments later and despite being down to 13 men, Pock turned the ball over on halfway and moved the ball to winger Flynn Sangwin who ran 40 metres to score and restore Pocklington’s 14 point lead.
Consett hit back with a try in the left hand corner on 58 minutes and the conversion narrowed the deficit to 7 points. With 10 minutes to go Consett tried to clear their lines but were thwarted when the kick was charged down and fly half Harry Matthews gathered before winning the foot race to the line, Pollock again converting.
With the clock running out, the visitors took a quick lineout and scored a try to make the score 29 20. They added a further consolation try at the death but by now the game was over and Pocklington now face York at Clifton Park in Saturday’s final.
