Jerry Mooney

Yvonne Reay13 Jul - 10:04

We are saddened to announce the death of former PRUFC Merovingians captain Jerry Mooney.

Jerry, who previously played for Wharfedale, became Mero’s captain in 2009 after moving to Holme on Spalding Moor. He had a couple of seasons as Mero’s skipper, which always included bus trips to play against Wharfedale, before playing for the Pilgrims.

We send our deepest sympathies to Jerry’s family.

“There are people in all our lives who we rely on at some point in time… for rugby, it’s on the pitch, in the changing rooms, in the club house and on tour.
As captain of the Mero’s Jerry achieved great success by creating a diverse squad, the likes of which only rugby could throw together! That success was simply enjoyment - he loved the game and that spirit shone through.

The rugby tours he organised - Wharfedale and Skipton - were fine examples of one man’s ability to get people to enjoy rugby, no matter what their ability or background. A 14-man maul at Skipton with a scrum-half and full-back line still intact, was just one example of Jerry’s rugby mischief!

As his playing career drew to a close with cameos for the Pilgrims, Jerry and his family supported the club in so many other ways, and he quietly helped several club members find new career paths.

We will miss him greatly.”

Jerry's funeral will be held on Tuesday 22 July at 10.30am at Haltemprice Crematorium (HU10 6NS) and afterwards at Pocklington Rugby Club.
